Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's lacrosse team went into halftime down 8-7 after two unanswered goals before No. 11 Syracuse used a 4-0 run to start the second half and take a 16-11 decision at the University of Louisville Lacrosse Stadium on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
Louisville (9-6, 2-4), struck first when sophomore Brooke Campbell found the back of the net for the fifth time this season on fellow classmate Katie Oliverio's 38th assist of the season 5:18 into the game. Syracuse (12-4, 6-1) struck right back 58 seconds later when Tegan Brown notched her 50th goal of the season to tie the game at one.
The Cardinals went on a 3-0 run on two goals from Bergan Foley and a goal by Emily Dashiell before Syracuse scored four unanswered goals. Dashiell broke up the run with her second goal of the afternoon before the Orange went on a 3-0 run. Liz Lovejoy and Dashiell closed out the half with a 2-0 Cardinal run to pull the Cards within one goal.
Syracuse took control with their 4-0 run to start the second half before Foley gave the Cardinals back-to-back goals to pull the Cardinals within three, the closest they would get to the lead in the second half.
Dashiell paced the Cardinals with five goals on the afternoon to go along with four ground balls and recorded six draw controls for the third time this season. She entered the week ranked ninth in the NCAA in draw controls per game with 3.69 per contest, and outputted 11 draw controls on the week to up her average to 3.93 per game.
Foley added four goals to give her 68 on the season and 10 on the week. She entered the week leading the nation in goals per game and was in a three-way tie for first in total goals. Foley is currently averaging 4.53 goals per game. She now has 190 career goals and needs 10 more to reach the 200 mark.
"The fact that Bergan scored four goals while being face guarded is a tribute to her tenacity," said University of Louisville lacrosse head coach Kellie Young. "This was one game that I was worried she'd get marked out and yet she still scored."
Senior Ashley King paced the Cardinal defense. King, playing in her final home game at the University of Louisville Lacrosse Stadium, had a game-high five ground balls and a game-high four caused turnovers. She currently leads the Cardinals with 42 ground balls.
Danielle Pawliw had ten saves on the afternoon for the Cardinals with five in each half.
The Cardinals had 16 draw controls to the Oranges' 13. Currently, U of L is ranked second nationally in draw controls behind No. 1 Northwestern.
"We beat them in draw controls, which is great, but we needed to capitalize on that," said Young. "Until we play 60 minutes at our highest intensity, we cannot expect to win against a top 12 team."
The Cardinals will travel to Rutgers on Friday afternoon to play the Scarlet Knights at 3 p.m. Louisville owns a 1-1 all-time record against Rutgers, taking a 10-8 decision last season in Louisville.
