
No. 15 Softball Tops St. John's 16-2

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Senior Vanessa James and freshman Jordan Trimble each went 3 for 3 as the No. 15 University of Louisville softball team rolled to a 16-2 five inning win over St. John's in a non-conference matchup Friday morning at the Charleston Southern Tournament. The Cardinals (5-1) will face Charleston Southern Friday afternoon at approximately 3:30 p.m.
The Red Storm jumped to a 2-0 lead early when Chelsea Durning led off the game with a walk and Kacee Cox blasted a one-out homer over the left field fence.
The Cards used five hits to take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second. Vanessa James led off with a double down the left field line, took third on Alicja Wolny's sacrifice bunt and scored on Kristin Austen's groundout. Jordan Trimble followed with a two-out shot over the left field fence to make it a 2-2 game. Jennifer Esteban doubled and scored on Melissa Roth's triple to pull Louisville ahead 3-2. Colby Wherry's single plated Roth to make it a 4-2 game.
Five hits and three St. John's errors sparked an eight-run third for Louisville. James and Wolny started the inning with walks. An error allowed Kristin Austin to reach and James to score. Jordan followed with a two-run double. Chelsea Bemis reached on another miscue which sent Trimble to third for Wherry's RBI single. Brittany York emptied the bases with a two-run double and came around to score on another Red Storm error on James' infield single. Wolny's double brought home James to make it a 12-2 game.
U of L tacked on four more runs in the top of the fifth. Roth delivered a one-out hit, Katelynn Mann walked, Christina Roesel's RBI single scored Roth. York walked to load the bases. Wild pitches sent Mann and Roesel home and James' base hit plated York for the 12-2 final.
Kristen Wadwell (3-0) got the win, holding the Red Storm scoreless and scattering two hits and striking out four in three innings of relief. Starter Chelsea Leonard allowed two earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts in two innings. James finished the game batting 3 for 3 with three runs and an RBI, while Trimble was 3 for 3 with three RBI and two runs. Louisville outhit St. John's
Linzee Sumrall (1-1) took the loss, giving up 11 runs, six earned, on eight hits and striking out two in 2.2 innings. Cox and Stacia Dopudja each had a pair of hits for St. John's (1-1).
