
Volleyball Beats Pitt in BIG EAST Matchup

Lola Arslanbekova had 20 kills to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over Pitt in BIG EAST volleyball action Saturday afternoon in Pittsburgh.
U of L hit .250 and had 58 kills with four aces for the 25-18, 25-21, 18-25, 25-19 win and improves to 16-6 and 10-1 in the BIG EAST. Pitt hit .238 with 48 kills and four aces to fall to 11-16 and 5-6 in the BIG EAST. U of L recorded eight blocks to Pitt's nine for just the second time this season that the Cards have not dominated the net.
U of L's Emily Juhl hit .409 with 10 kills and an ace to her credit. Taylor Brauneis had a match-high 43 assists and fellow freshman Caitlin Welch had a match-high 20 digs. Amanda Simmons recorded six blocks, also a match high. Pitt was led by Amy Town's 17 kills and four blocks.
U of L jumped on a sluggish Pitt in the first set, taking advantage of the Panther's chilly .065 hitting. The Cardinals led for all but one point, although Pitt managed to tie four times early. The second set was tightly contested with 13 ties. Pitt's hitting improved to .194 but U of L hit .250 to edge the Panthers 25-21. U of L never led in the third game as Panthers dug their heels in to prevent the sweep. U of L's .172 hitting was no match for Pitt's .429 firepower. The Cards' hitting hand heated up in the final set when they connected on 21 kills on 39 swings for a .385 percentage.
The Cardinals travel to West Virginia for a Sunday match against the Mountaineers at 2 p.m.
