BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - Sophomore Amber Thomas scored twice, but it wasn't enough as host Indiana University defeated the eighth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team 3-2 in overtime Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals drop to 8-4 on the season, while the Hoosiers improve to 6-4.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Cardinals took a 2-1 lead behind goals from sophomore Amber Thomas. Louisville maintained the lead throughout much of the half, but Indiana took advantage of a penalty corner as time expired to send the game into overtime.
Brenna Moeljadi put the Hoosiers on the scoreboard midway through the first half when she connected on penalty corner assists from Kelsey Kiper and Kristy McFadden. The Hoosiers took the 1-0 lead into halftime after Louisville held a 3-2 edge in shots and the teams had one penalty corner apiece.
The Cards' first goal came at the 56:43 mark after Louisville was awarded a penalty corner and junior Hayley Turner's shot was stopped by IU goalkeeper Alex Mann. Thomas was in position to collect the rebound and send the ball into the cage to tie the game at 1-1.
Two minutes later, Thomas put Louisville up 2-1 when she deflected a penalty corner shot from senior Tuli Lim for her seventh goal of the season.
The Cardinals went on to draw two corners and fire off three more shots, all turned back by Mann. With just under 20 seconds remaining in regulation, the Hoosiers earned a corner, but Moeljadi's shot missed. IU was quickly awarded another corner with no time remaining on the clock and this time Moeljadi's shot found the back of the cage with assists from Kiper and McFadden.
In the second half, Louisville outshot Indiana 14-5 and held a 9-3 advantage in corners.
With the game tied at 2-2, the teams entered a 15 minute overtime period. U of L opened the extra period with a shot by Turner, but IU goalkeeper Jaclyn Milici was there to pick up the save. Louisville sophomore goalkeeper Erin Conrad stopped Brautigram's shot and the Cardinals staved off a Hoosier penalty corner attempt. The Cards came back down the field for another scoring opportunity, but senior Nicole Youman's shot went wide of the cage. The Hoosiers distributed the ball downfield and Corey Brautigam dribbled into the circle and sent the ball past Conrad for the game-winner at the 81:19 mark.
In the game, Louisville outshot Indiana 19-10 and held a 10-5 advantage in corners. Conrad (8-4) had three saves in the loss. Mann (6-4) posted 10 saves to get the win.
U of L will go back on the road to face BIG EAST Conference opponent Rutgers on Oct. 9 and No. 3 Princeton on Oct. 10.
