
No. 8 Field Hockey Tops Rutgers 2-0

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - - Senior Jenna Ahern and sophomore Amber Thomas scored as the eighth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Rutgers 2-0 in a BIG EAST Conference game Saturday. Louisville improves to 9-4 on the season and 3-1 in league play while Rutgers drops to 4-9 (1-3).
"Today we were able to move the ball well and create solid scoring opportunities," said Y of L head coach Pam Bustin. "Fortunately, we were able to capitalize on two. We will continue to work on our attacking mindset. Rutgers challenged us defensively, which will help us down the road. It was a great Big East contest and a great win for U of L."
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard early in the first half when sophomore Amber Thomas connected on an assist from senior Nicole Youman for her eighth goal of the season.
Louisville took the 1-0 lead into halftime after outshooting the Scarlet Knights 10-3 and holding a 9-2 advantage in corners.
The Cardinals added an insurance goal midway through the second half. Senior Jenna Ahern tipped Youman's penalty corner shot for her second goal of the season and the 2-0 win.
In the game the Cardinals held a 15-10 lead in shots and a 13-6 lead in corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Conrad (9-4) posted five saves en route to her fourth shutout of the season. Rutgers' Sarah Stuby had three stops in the loss.
U of L (9-4, 3-1 BIG EAST) will travel to Princeton to face the third-ranked Tigers Sunday at 1 p.m.
