LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - University of Louisville men's tennis coach Rex Ecarma has announced that junior Austen Childs has been named team captain for the 2009-10 season.
"Austen Childs has been selected as our team captain," said Ecarma. "He served as our 2nd captain last year and will replace last year's first captain Robert Rotaru, who graduated. Austen has been a good leader but on the quiet side. He led by example. As indicative by this summer, he will continue to lead by example but also verbally. That should be fun. Simon Childs has been selected as the second captain. Simon has proven that he can excel on the tennis court and also has proven he can balance all of his responsibilities off the court as well. He has an extremely full plate and has shown a level of success in all area. I am excited that he is our second captain for the upcoming season."
Austen Childs finished his sophomore campaign where he started - at his career-best No. 26 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, where he also stood in the preseason rankings. Childs posted a 28-13 overall record and went 19-4 playing mostly as the Cards' top seed. The 2009 BIG EAST Player of the Year was also a first team all-league selection and earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors three times. Childs also earned his second straight trip to the NCAA Singles Championship in 2009.
The duo of Austen Childs and Simon Childs (no relation) finished the season at No. 29 after peaking at No. 6 for the highest ranking in program history earlier in the season. Childs and Childs teamed for a 26-9 overall record in 2009 and were at 13-5 at the No. 1 position and earned their second consecutive NCAA Doubles Championship bid.
The Cardinals will hold the Louisville Fall Invitational Sept 11-12 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
