The University of Louisville's Austen Childs fell to seventh-seeded Michael Venus of LSU in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship Wednesday afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center at Texas A&M.
"Austen served well and volleyed well but made too many errors to win this match," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Michael Venus won the All-American Championships in the fall and was in the top 10 all year and it showed. He had a big first and second serve and his inside out forehand was dangerous because he disguised what corner he was going to hit to. Austen did not have an answer for it and never threatened his service games at all. Michael played an extremely offensive match with few unforced errors. Austen needed to return effectively but fell short. But when you reflect upon his singles record this year he has won a lot of matches for us and some memorable ones against Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Texas A&M, Minnesota, and Stanford. He has improved a lot and we plan to develop him even more before next fall."
Childs, a sophomore from Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand, wraps up the season with a 28-13 overall record after earning his second trip to the NCAA Singles Championship. He was ranked among the top 50 all season, after reaching as high as No. 26 in the preseason rankings. Childs entered the NCAA tournament at No. 28.
Austen Childs will team with Simon Childs to compete in the NCAA doubles championship Thursday afternoon.
