LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville sophomore outfielder Phil Wunderlich was selected as one of Louisville Slugger's National Players of the Week after his impressive performance at the plate last week.
The Chicago native hit .522 (12-for-23) with 14 RBI, four home runs, four doubles and a 1.217 slugging percentage in five games. The Louisville Slugger national honor is awarded by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and is the second such honor for a Cardinal this season as junior third baseman Chris Dominguez earned the award on March 9.
Wunderlich had a career-best six RBI in the Cards' win over at Indiana last Tuesday, finished with three hits and four RBI in Friday's win over Notre Dame and had two home runs against the Irish on Saturday. Overall, he is the Cards' leader in batting average at .358, co-leader in home runs with 12 and second in RBI with 48.
The amazing week at the plate for Wunderlich also came just two weeks after he suffered a broken nose and fractured orbital after being hit in the face by a 3-2 pitch in the eighth inning of the Cardinals' game against Indiana on April 7.
Up next, Louisville will return to the road for a mid-week game at rival Kentucky on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. ET, in Lexington before traveling to Philadelphia, Pa., for a three-game BIG EAST series at Villanova on Friday-Sunday.
