PROVIDENCE R.I. - University of Louisville sophomore righty Thomas Royse was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Monday for his one-hit performance last Saturday against Pittsburgh.
The Lexington, Ky., native earned his second straight win overall and improved to 2-2 on the season as he allowed only one run and faced the minimum in a career-high 8.0 innings of work in the Cardinals' 1-0 win over the Panthers. After retiring the first 16 hitters he faced, Royse allowed a one-out single to right field in the sixth inning by catcher Kevan Smith for the only hit of the day for the Panthers. Royse got back on a track with a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of centerfielder Zach Duggan and from there, Royse was perfect through the seventh and eight innings to set the stage for the Cards' eighth inning rally.
Up next, the Cardinals (24-9) will conclude their five-game homestand on Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET against Kentucky at Jim Patterson Stadium. General admission tickets are available for the game and can be purchased at the U of L Ticket Office in the Student Activities Center on South Floyd St., or at the stadium starting at 4 p.m., ET on Tuesday prior to the game.
Reserved seats for the annual Cardinals-Wildcats clash on the baseball diamond at Jim Patterson Stadium are sold out.
