LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - No. 20/22 Louisville defeated Tennessee Tech 7-2 in the final game of the Louisville Softball Tournament Sunday at Ulmer Stadium. The Cards finished the weekend with a 4-0 record and move to 18-2 on the season.
"Tennessee Tech came out swinging their bats today," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "I didn't think we were aggressive to start the game, but we made the adjustments and found our offense. We also made some great defensive plays today. This what we need to keep doing if we want to achieve the goals we've set for ourselves."
Chelsea Bemis connected on a three-run homer in the second to give the Cards a 3-0 lead. Kristi Cunningham and Brittany York started the inning with back-to-back singles to set up Bemis' shot over left center field.
Tennessee Tech answered with two runs in the top of the third. Jordan Leff led off with an infield single and Kimmie White's two-out base hit placed runners on for Whitney Cummings' two-run double to pull the Golden Eagles within a run.
The Cards tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Kristin Austin drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on an error when Kassie Stanfill beat the throw on a bunt single. Brittany York's groundout sent Austin home. Bemis followed with a double to score Stanfill and make it a 5-2 game.
Louisville used four hits to put up a pair of runs in the sixth. Austin doubled and scored on Stanfill's single and Cunningham followed with an RBI double for the 7-2 final.
