Lianne Bobal had six goals to lead the University of Louisville to a 20-6 win over visiting Villanova in the Cardinals' home opener Friday night at the U of L Lacrosse Stadium.
"This was, by far, the best game that the University of Louisville has played since day one," said U of L head coach Kellie Young. "We were consistent and feisty and executed our game plan."
U of L outshot the Wildcats 33-21, scoring 20 goals but it was the Cardinal defense that made the difference in the game. U of L successfully cleared 16 of their 19 attempts and caused 21 turnovers, led by Ashley King's five. King also scooped up five ground balls, as did Aimee Dixon.
"Our defense shut them down. We did a great job on ground balls, really, we did a great job on defense across the board," said U of L head coach Kellie Young.
The Cardinals' Bergan Foley added four goals and an assist with Liz Lovejoy posting four goals as well. Bobal's five first half goals tied a school mark for goals in a half, set by Foley last year against UConn. Tara Restly, who had four assists, tied her own school record for assists in a game that she set last year against Manhattan.
U of L scored just under a minute into the game when Liz Lovejoy scored off a free position shot. The Cardinals were up 3-0 before Taylor Lucy scored VU's first goal at 24:23. Four unanswered U of L goals, three by Bobal, took the Cards up 7-1. VU's Rachel Lasda managed to sneak a goal in at 15:27. Bobal scored again and was answered by Triscia Shanahan a minute later to take the score to 8-3. The Cardinals then scored four straight to take a 12-3 lead into the lockerroom at the half.
VU's Sarah Berger scored the first goal of the second half at 28:48 but then Louisville unleashed a five goal barrage against the Wildcats to go up 17-4. With the clock running, VU managed to scored just two more times before the horn.
U of L returns to action Tuesday against Longwood at 5 p.m. at U of L Lacrosse Stadium.
