PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Louisville's Simon Childs was named BIG EAST Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday, March 4. He becomes the second consecutive and third overall Louisville player to earn the league honor this season.
Childs, a sophomore from Hillington, England, took a singles match from the No. 3 position against Wake Forest, topping Steve Forman 6-4, 6-4. He followed that win with a three-set decision over Texas A&M's Austin Krajicek (6-4, 2-6, 6-2). Childs teamed with classmate Austen Childs as the nation's sixth-ranked doubles team to defeat the Aggies' 8th-ranked duo of Connor Pollock and Austin Krajicek (8-6). Childs only loss on the weekend came from Wake Forest's top-ranked doubles team of Cory Parr and Steve Forman.
"Simon has been working extra hard on movement, footwork, and focus," said coach Rex Ecarma. "He has really `cleaned up' his game now and cut down his unforced errors. He is also competing in a more positive way. Beating one of the top players in the ACC in Steve Forman and the former United States National Junior champion in Austin Krajicek is a great effort. Then capping it off with a win versus the eighth-ranked doubles team in country was icing on the cake. We have a sign in our locker room that says `positive attitude plus positive effort equals positive results.' Simon has been living it recently."
The 16th ranked Cardinals (11-2) will travel to No. 32 Virginia Tech Friday, March 6.
