The University of Louisville's Austen Childs earned BIG EAST Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors as announced by the conference office on March 18. He becomes the fourth consecutive and fifth overall Louisville player to earn the league honor.
"Austen has been very consistent for the team for the month of March," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "With the exception of the Virginia Tech match, he has played very well. In the Middle Tennessee match, their No.1 player had never lost in his college career, so to beat him on his home court was a great testament of how hard Austen fought for the win. He and Simon also closed out a Middle Tennessee's nationally ranked doubles team as well. He is very deserving of this Big East Award."
Childs (Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand) made the most of a short week for Louisville, posting a singles and doubles win over ranked opponents from Middle Tennessee. Childs, who is No. 40 in singles, made quick work of No. 110 Robert McKenzie 6-3, 6-4. In doubles, the sophomore teamed with classmate Simon Childs as the nation's then-15th-ranked duo outlasted the Blue Raiders' 34th-ranked pair of McKenzie and John Peers 9-8 (7-5).
Austen Childs has compiled an 11-3 mark as Louisville's No. 1 player and is 20-11 overall as he earns his second Player of the Week honor this season.
The 16th ranked Cardinals (14-3) are coming off of a 6-1 win over Middle Tennessee and are back in action on Saturday, March 21 when they play host to Old Dominion at 11 a.m. in their first outdoor home match of the season.
