LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The 17th ranked University of Louisville defeated Illinois-Chicago 6-3 Sunday in the Courtyard by Marriott Airport Cardinal Tournament. The Cards capped the weekend with a 4-1 record and improved to 22-3 on the season before entering BIG EAST Conference play.
Louisville jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Kristin Austin singled, took second when Chelsea Bemis was hit by a pitch and scored on an error.
The Cardinals added another run in the third when Bemis' RBI single scored Vanessa James who had led off the inning with a base hit.
UIC got a run back in the top of the fourth when Brooke Frydendall singled and took second on the throw and Kelsey Sturgeon connected on an RBI single to make it a 2-1 game.
U of L used four hits and an error to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kassie Stanfill led off with a double, moved to third on Kassie Stanfill's single and came home on an error on the play. Kristen Wadwell followed with an RBI double to increase the lead to 4-1.
The Flames pulled within a run again in the top of the fifth. Christie Seddon reached on a leadoff error and stole second. Sarah Clynes singled and both runners came home on Stephanie Chavez' triple to make the score 4-3.
The Cards put two more runs on the board in the home half of the inning. Bemis walked and Wherry was safe on a bunt single. A two-out error allowed Wadwell to reach and an error on the play plated Bemis and pinch runner Tesha Paysen for the 6-3 win.
Wadwell (17-3) got the win, allowing three runs, one earned on six hits and fanned six in 5.0 innings. Tori Collins notched her first save of the season, holding the Flames scoreless and striking out two in 2.0 innings. Cunningham was 2 for 3 with a run.
Clynes (1-9) took the loss, giving up four runs, three of them earned, on eight hits in 3.0 innings. Chavez was 2 for 3 with two RBI. UIC drops to 4-17 on the season.
U of L (22-3) will open BIG EAST Conference play on Friday, March 20 at 2 p.m. when they play host to USF in a doubleheader.
