The University of Louisville men's tennis team moved up to No. 14 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national team rankings released on March 10. The Cards are up two spots from last week when they appeared at No. 16.
"This is our second highest ranking in history and are happy but not satisfied with it," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "There are around 260 Division 1 tennis schools so we are in an elite group of programs who have won and competed in national championships."
The Cards have reached the top 15 for the first time since the 2006 season when they reached a program-high 12th in the country.
"I spoke with former Big East Player of the Year, Slavko Radman, last night," said Ecarma. "He is really impressed with this young team. There are a lot of similarities with the current team and the 2006 team that won the Big East and reached No. 12 in the country. Both of these years we had baseliners at Nos. 5 and 6, an all-court player at No. 4, an attacker at No. 3, a big-hitter at No. 2 and an extremely talented No. 1 singles player. There are so many similarities it is almost scary. But we all know we have a full outdoor season ahead of us and we have to continue to develop and get better. This team has a great work-ethic so I believe we can continue to be successful."
The Cards (13-3) are coming off of a pair of 7-0 wins over Xavier and Southern Illinois on Sunday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center and will travel to No. 58 Middle Tennessee Saturday, March 14.
