LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The No. 21/23 University of Louisville softball team defeated IUPUI 8-0 Saturday in five innings in the Red & Black Tournament. The Cards notched their fifth shutout and improve to 14-2 on the season. Saturday's 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. tournament games were cancelled due to inclement weather in the area.
Kassie Stanfill got things started for the Cards with a leadoff triple in the third. She scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tori Collins to put Louisville on the scoreboard. Colby Wherry followed with a double and took third when Vanessa James was safe on a bunt single. A wild pitch allowed Wherry to cross the plate and an error on the play brought James home to make it a 3-0 game.
Louisville used four hits and an error to put up a five spot in the fourth. York started the inning with a double and took third on Collins' groundout. Wherry connected on an RBI double. James' walk placed runners on first and second for Roth's two-run single. Austin followed with a single, an IUPUI miscue sent Roth home and Austin to third. Austin capped the scoring when she came home on a wild pitch to make the score 8-0.
Collins (5-0) got the win, holding the Jaguars scoreless and giving up four hits and striking out three in four innings. Kristen Wadwell combined on the shutout, retiring all three batters she faced in the fifth inning. Wherry was 2 for 2 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI. Austin was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run. James was 1 for 1 with two runs.
Jessica McGown (1-4) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits in 1. 2 innings. IUPUI drops to 1-10 on the season.
U of L (14-2) will conclude Red & Black Tournament play against Western Illinois Sunday at 3 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
