
Volleyball Quiets Red Storm in Three

Freshman outside hitter Lola Arslanbekova had 16 kills and a dig to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-17, 25-14, 26-24 win over visiting St. John's in BIG EAST volleyball action Friday night at the Kentucky International Convention Center downtown.
U of L, which clinched a berth in the BIG EAST tournament next week, is now 16-10 and 9-4 in the league. St. John's drops to 9-20 and 2-11 in the BIG EAST. U of L hit .269 and outblocked the Red Storm 9-5. Cardinal Anastasia Artemeva added 10 kills and two blocks in the effort. Lindsey Mango had a match-high 13 digs. Gosia Lech led with 35 assists. St. John's was led by Darlene Ramdin's 11 kills.
U of L used an 11-1 run late in the first set for the 25-17 win. The Cards hit .276 to St. John's -.129 and outblocked the Red Storm 4-0. St. John's did record four aces. Gwen Rucker led with three kills for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals used another key run in the second set when they ran off nine straight to go up 20-6. SJU made a brief run but U of L's .275 hitting carried them to a 25-14 win. Kasey Heckelman had three kills to pace the Cards.
The third set was close with the Cardinals not taking their first lead until 21-20. The Red Storm 22, 23, 24 but kills by Lola Arslanbekova and Anastasia Artemeva had consecutive kills to give U of L the set and match. Lola had 10 kills to lead the Cardinals.
The Cardinals return to the KICC on Sunday at 2 p.m. when UConn visits for the final regular season BIG EAST match.
