Sumit Gupta picked up wins in singles and doubles as the University of Louisville men's tennis team completed play in the Louisville Winter Invitational Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. All matches were moved indoors due to inclement weather and the first round of play in each division was completed.
"Sumit Gupta played loose and with confidence and won in singles and doubles," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "He has practiced well all week and we knew he would come out and play big today."
In Flight `A' singles, Gupta defeated IU-Southeast's Adam Denney 6-0, 6-4 to advance to the second round, where he will face Duquesne's Mark Maciuch Saturday. In other `A' flight action, Wright State's Tore Waldhausen edged Adam Donaldson 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).
Tim Barnoud received a first round bye in the `B' flight and will face Tennessee Tech's Lloyd Harris in the second round Saturday.
In Flight 'A' doubles action, Gupta and Donaldson teamed to beat Western Kentucky's Priyank Gangadharan and Arul Selvan 8-1. The Cardinal duo will face Xavier's J.T. Torbeck and Anthony Palmenter in Saturday's quarterfinals.
