CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - - The 13th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team fell to host No. 8 Virginia Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va.
Floor Vogels gave Virginia a 1-0 advantage when she scored on a penalty corner at 14:17. Kaitlyn Hiltz then made it 2-0 less than three minutes later.
Louisville got on the board at 24:08 when sophomore Tuli Lim dribbled past the Virginia defensive corps all the way into the circle and past Cavalier goalkeeper Devon Burnley to pull the Cards within one.
At 26:52, UVa converted its second score off a penalty corner as Inge Kaars Sijpestei provided an insurance goal. The Cavaliers led 3-1 at halftime.
Both teams added a goal in the second half. On yet another penalty corner opportunity seven minutes into the period, Kaars Sijpesteijn shot the ball that was saved off Louisville junior goalkeeper Heather Bustanoby. Lucy Meyers was there to collect the rebound and put the ball in the back of the cage to increase Virginia's lead to 4-1.
The Cardinals scored their second goal of the game at 61:17. Sophomore Nikki Auker tallied the score on a rebound after a shot and a Virginia save.
Bustanoby finished with the game with a season-high 11 saves for the Cards. UVa goalkeepers Amy Desjadon tallied nine save and Burnley added one in the first half for a total of 10.
Louisville outcornered Virginia 11-7, but UVa outshot U of L 22-15 in the game. The Cardinals (3-2) will face their sixth consecutive top 20 opponent - and open BIG EAST Conference play - on Friday, Sept. 19 when they travel to No. 7 Syracuse.
