BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team got the fall season off to an impressive start with five wins at the Hoosier Invitational Friday.
"This was a great start for U of L today," said Cardinals head coach Rex Ecarma. "Andrew Carter and Robert Hall showed why they were highly recruited junior players with their wins and Tim showed that he wants to be a factor on the team this year. I was pleased with how they won some close matches and played with a lot of mental toughness and heart."
Tim Barnoud defeated IUPUI's Fernando Freitas 7-6, 7-5 in his first round match. Robert Hall outlasted Xavier's J.T. Torbeck 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 and fellow freshman Andrew Carter picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over E.J. Dechow to advance to the second round.
In doubles action, Barnoud and Hall combined to beat Morehead State's Wolfson and Sundgren 8-6 in the first round. Louisville's Carter teamed Western Michigan's Brad Noel to defeat Michigan State's Alex Forger and Clark Richardson 8-6. Barnoud and Hall topped Carter and Noel 8-4 to move to the quarterfinals.
"I was pleased with the effort and focus the guys displayed today," said Ecarma. "They look to be in great shape as all their preseason training has paid off so far. We hope day two goes as well as today."
The Hoosier Invitational will continue Saturday and Sunday in Bloomington, Ind.
