
Softball Defeats Winthrop 4-1

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Louisville softball team defeated Winthrop 4-1 Saturday in the Knoxville Regional. The Cards will face host 13th-ranked Tennessee (48-15) at approximately 5:30 p.m. in the second elimination game of the day.
The Cards jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Sarah Totten and Chelsea Bemis drew back-to-back walks and scored on Kassie Stanfill's two-run triple to right center.
U of L added another run in the second when Kristen Wadwell delivered a single that hit the right field line just past first base. She took second on Kristi Cunningham's sacrifice bunt moved to third on Melissa Roth's groundout. Totten's RBI single made it a 3-0 game.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Lenny Stoddart broke up Wadwell's no-hitter with a one-out double and scored on Sarah Magee's single to make the score 3-1.
U of L got the run back in the home half of the fifth. Stanfill led off with a double off the top of left center wall. Colby Wherry followed with a single top place runners on first and second. Brittany York sent a hard shot back that ricocheted off Winthrop pitcher Cari Wooldridge's leg, second baseman Sarah Magee scooped it up and threw to catcher Carole Redo, but Stanfill slid in under the tag to give the Cards a 4-1 lead.
Wadwell (19-14) got the win, giving up one earned run, striking out five and scattering three hits in seven innings. Stanfill led the Cards offensively, going 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, two RBI and one run. Wherry was 2 for 4.
Megan Evans (18-7) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on two hits in 2.1 innings of work. Winthrop finishes the season with a 36-19 record.
Louisville (31-22) will face host 13th-ranked Tennessee at 5 p.m. in the second elimination game of the day. The Lady Vols fell to No. 16 Virginia Tech 4-0 Saturday's opening game.
