RICHMOND, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team defeated host Eastern Kentucky 4-2 Wednesday afternoon
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard in the top of the third. Kristi Cunningham led off with a double and Melissa Roth followed with her first home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right field fence.
U of L added two more runs in the fourth when Brittany York delivered a leadoff double, and took third on Christina Roesel's base hit. Kaylyn Castillo's single plated York. Roesel came home on Cunningham's groundout to make it a 4-0 game.
The Cardinals squelched the Colonels first scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth. Katie Rolf delivered a two-out double and Amber Lenz and Adriel Foxley were hit by pitches to load the bases. Louisville starting pitcher Kassie Stanfill struck out Shyenne Hussey to end the inning.
EKU put up two runs in the bottom of the seventh when Cassi Gibson singled and Rolf followed with a one-out two-run shot over the right field fence to make it a 4-2 game. Lenz then registered double to bring the tying run to the plate with one out. Stanfill got Foxley to ground out, Lenz went to third on the play. Hussey, the EKU cleanup hitter grounded out to first base to end the game.
Stanfill (10-6) got the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out five in seven innings. Cunningham was 2 for 3 with two doubles a run and an RBI. York was 2 for 3 with a run and Sarah Totten was 2 for 4.
EKU starter Stacye Toups (9-6) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on four hits and striking out two in 2.0 innings. Rolf led the Colonels offensively, going 2 for 4 with a home run. Eastern Kentucky falls to 26-19 on the season.
Louisville (29-18) will wrap up the regular season on the road with two BIG EAST doubleheaders. The Cards have a 12-6 league record and stand tied for third in the league with Pittsburgh. U of L will face fifth-place Connecticut (11-7) on Saturday and eighth place Providence on Sunday. All three teams have secured spots in the 2008 BIG EAST Tournament with the seeding to be determined after this weekends' final games.
