BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - The University of Louisville softball team defeated host Indiana 4-0 Wednesday at the IU Softball Field. The Cardinals improve to 25-18 on the season.
"I thought we started timid at the plate but started driving the ball like we're capable of as the game went on," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "Toward the end of the game we need to do a better job of handling pressure. WE need to make the defensive plays to not allow runners on base, overall happy with another win.
Indiana starting pitcher Sara Olson allowed only one base runner in the first five innings, but Louisville broke through with three runs in the sixth. Kristi Cunningham reached on a fielder's choice and Melissa Roth was hit by a pitch to set up Chelsea Bemis' two-run double. Bemis took third on a wild pitch and scored on Colby Wherry's RBI single to make it a 3-0 game.
The Hoosiers threatened to score in the bottom of the sixth. Jennilee Huddleston led of with a single and Julia Hamilton followed with a walk, both runners moved on Olson's groundout. Tori Yamaguchi drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but Louisville starting pitcher Kristen Wadwell struck out Stephanie Pellerito to end the inning.
Brittany York led off the seventh with a home run over the left field fence to increase the lead to 4-0.
Wadwell (14-11) picked up the complete game shutout, scattering four hits and striking out six. Five Cardinals had hits with Bemis driving in two runs.
Olson (2-8) took the loss, surrendering four runs, one earned on five hit and striking out four.
U of L (25-18, 10-6 BIG EAST) currently tied for fifth in the BIG EAST, will travel to conference leader South Florida for a doubleheader Saturday, April 26.
