
Softball Sweeps Syracuse 6-1 and 8-5

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Freshman Chelsea Bemis had six RBIs on the day as the University of Louisville softball team swept visiting Syracuse 6-1 and 8-5 Friday at Ulmer Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 22-14 (8-2 BIG EAST) while the Orange fall to 14-21 (5-5).
Louisville took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Melissa Roth led off with her team-leading 15th double of the season. Sarah Totten walked and Kassie Stanfill was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Colby Wherry reached on a fielder's choice which saw Roth out at home. Chelsea Bemis stepped up to the plate and delivered a two-run single. Brittany York's sharply hit single back to the pitcher plated Wherry. Brooke McCrain reached on a fielder's choice. Kristen Wadwell's two-run double capped the five-run inning.
Syracuse struck for a run in the top of the second when Rachel Tilford drew a leadoff walk, stole second, took third on Lindsay Wasek's groundout and came on Nicole Miller's RBI single to make it a 5-1 game.
The Cards tacked on another run in the home half of the second when Roth walked, took second on Totten's bunt single and scored on Kassie Stanfill's double to increase the lead to 6-1.
Wadwell (11-9) got the win, giving up one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts in seven innings. The Cardinals had eight hits in the game Roth and Totten each finished 2 for three with a run. Roth had two doubles in the game to increase her total to 16 on the season. Bemis was 1 for 2 with two RBI.
Brittany Gardner (8-7) took the loss, surrendering six earned runs on eight hits and fanned five in six innings.
In game two, the Cards again took an early lead and fought off a Syracuse rally to win 8-5.
U of L got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Totten reached on a fielder's choice, Stanfill singled and Wherry registered an RBI hit to send Totten home. Bemis delivered a her team-leading fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot over the left field fence to make it a 4-0 game.
The Orange answered in the top of the second when Amy Kelley walked Tilford doubled and Wasek walked to load the bases with no outs. Tawni Irvine's base hit brought Kelly home and Tilford scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-2 game.
Syracuse pulled within a run in the top of the third. Chanel Roehner was hit by a pitch, moved to second on Hallie Gibbs' groundout, took third on Amy Kelley's single and crossed the plate on Tilford's base hit, making the score 4-3.
The Cardinals got two runs back in the bottom of the third to increase the lead to 6-3. Stanfill reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Bemis' single. York's base hit plated Bemis.
Roehner's two-run homer in the fourth cut the lead to one run, making it a 6-5 ballgame.
Louisville finally put the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kristi Cunningham led off with a double, took third on Roth's groundout and came on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Totten. Stanfill followed with a triple and scored on Wherry's base hit for the 8-5 final.
Stanfill (9-4) started the game and gave up two earned runs on two hits in, she was replaced in the second by Wadwell, who threw three innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits. Stanfill returned in the fifth inning and retired seven batters before surrendering a one-out double to Kelley in the top of the seventh. She went on to set down the next to batters to get the win.
The Cards had 12 hits in the game. Bemis was 2 for 3 with a home run, four RBI and two runs. Stanfill was 2 for 3 with a triple and three runs. Wherry and York were also 2 for 3 in the game.
Roehner (6-7) took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits in 6.0 innings. Jamie Kelling was 2 for 4 with a run. Tilford was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI and Roehner was 1 for 3 with two runs and two RBI.
U of L (22-14, 8-2) will play host to Pittsburgh on another BIG EAST doubleheader Sunday at 11 a.m.
