LEXINGTON, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team handed host Kentucky a 6-1 loss to snap the Wildcats' seven game win streak Wednesday evening .
"I'm excited by how we're playing now," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We are confident and relaxed offensively. Every good performance seems to be helping this team to grow. I was pleased with our defense and with Kristen Wadwell's performance in the circle."
The Cardinals used seven hits and three UK errors to explode for six runs in the top of the second. Kassie Stanfill reached on a fielder's choice, took second on an error and came home on Kristen Wadwell's double to start the scoring. A wild pitch sent Wadwell to third and she scored on Kaylyn Castillo's base hit. A two-out dropped foul ball extended Kristi Cunningham's at bat and she took advantage of the error by delivering her third home run of the season, a two-run shot over centerfield to make it a 4-0 game. Melissa Roth followed with a two-out double. Sarah Totten registered an RBI single and Chelsea Bemis stepped up to the plate with an RBI double to increase the lead to 6-0.
Kentucky got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Samantha DeMartine drew a two-out walk, took second on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on Annie Rowlands' base hit to make it a 6-1 game. Rowlands took third on a wild pitch to mark the only other time the Wildcats had a runner in scoring position.
Louisville starter Kristen Wadwell (4-5) went the distance to get win, scattering three hits and striking out six. Offensively, the Cards had 10 hits in the game. Kaylyn Castillo led at plate, going 2 for 3 with a run. Roth finished batting 2 for 4 with a double and a run.
Amber Matousek (4-5) took the loss, giving up six runs, only two earned, and striking out four. The Wildcats drop to 9-8 on the season.
U of L (8-8) will host the Red & Black Tournament March 7-9 at Ulmer Stadium.
