March 24, 2008
For the first time in school history, the University of Louisville men's swimming team will send a contingent of swimmers to the 2008 Men's Division I NCAA Championships March 27-29 in Federal Way, Washington at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. In all, six Cardinal swimmers will be racing in the post-season for U of L.
For the past two years, junior Vali Preda has been U of L's lone qualifier and the only man to score points in the NCAA Championship meet for the Cardinals.
Until now.
This year, Preda will be joined by teammates Carlos Van Isschot, Chris Lindauer, Adam Madarassy, Rafal Kuchta and BIG EAST Swimmer of the Year Andrei Radzionau. The Cardinals were invited in five individual events as well as the 400-free relay. According to the rules, if an athlete is invited in one event, he may also swim in events in which he made a B-cut as well. This means, in all, the Cardinals will be swimming in nine additional races, hoping to final in those as well.
Of the 49 schools participating, only 16 teams have more than six athletes qualifying. U of L has more than the rest of the BIG EAST Conference combined. Cincinnati, Notre Dame and WVU each have one with Pitt sending two.
