LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team will play host to Virginia Tech on Thursday, March 13 at 5 p.m., in the first outdoor match of the season.
The Cardinals (11-3) were scheduled to play at South Alabama on Sunday, March 9, but that match was postponed until Tuesday, because of poor travel conditions. Tuesday's match was then rained out. The Cards have been idle since March 2, when they suffered a 4-3 loss to Maryland. Simon Childs, Robert Rotaru and Alejandro Calligari picked up singles points for Louisville.
Freshman Austen Chids is currently No. 42 in the ITA singles rankings. The freshman from Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand has compiled a 19-7 overall record and is 9-2 at Louisville's top seeded player.
Austen Childs and fellow freshman Simon Childs (Hillington, England) stand in at No. 27 in the ITA doubles rankings. The duo dropped from their previous spot of 23 after losing two straight matches. Childs and Childs have a 10-3 record as the Cards' No. 1 doubles team. U of L is currently No. 45 in the latest ITA team rankings (March 11).
Virginia Tech enters the match ranked 31st in the nation with a perfect 9-0 record. Senior Albert Larregola stands in a No. 54 in the ITA singles rankings with a 20-7 overall record and is 5-2 as Tech's top seeded player.
"Anytime you play a team that is 9-0, you know their confidence is going to be extremely high," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We've got to match that confidence and match that strong body language. We know we've got our hands full and we have a lot of respect for Virginia Tech. I fee confident that we know what is at stake and how much a win could help in the long run with our NCAA resume. We look at this as a great opportunity for us with a quality home match. We'll be ready to play."
