
Softball Falls 6-4 to Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - - The University of Louisville softball team fell 6-4 to host Florida State in the championship game of the FSU Early Bird Tournament Saturday.
The Cards broke through a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third. Brittney Counts and Melissa Roth delivered back-to-back singles to start the inning and Sarah Totten stepped up to the plate and laced a two-run double down the left field line to make it a 2-0 game.
Florida State pulled within a run in the fourth when Jessica Gilmore led off the frame with a single, took second on Ashley Stager's sacrifice bunt, moved to third on Brittany Osmon's groundout and came home on Robin Ahrber's RBI single.
Louisville added increased the lead back to two runs in the fourth. Brooke McCrain led off with a single, took second when Colby Wherry was out on batter's interference and scored on Totten's base hit.
The Seminoles answered in the fifth when Michelle Snyder registered a one-out single and Whitney Buckmon beat the throw for an infield hit. Monica Montez's groundout moved the runners and both scored on Gilmore's base hit to tie the game at 3-3.
Osmon's three-run shot over the right field wall gave FSU a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Gilmore and Stager each registered back-to-back two-out singles to set up the game-winning home run.
The Cards put up a run and had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. Cunningham delivered a leadoff double, took second on Chelsea Bemis' flyout and scored when Brittany York reached on a two-base error. Kristen Wadwell singled to place runners on the corners with two outs, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. Florida State starter Terese Gober struck out the final batter for the win.
Gober (2-1) went the distance, giving up four earned runs on 12 hits and striking out three. The Seminoles had 11 hits in the game. Jessica Gilmore led at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI.
Stanfill (1-1) took the loss, giving up six earned runs on 11 hits, striking out six in the complete game. Totten paced the Cards offensively, going 3 for 4 at the plate with three RBI. Roth and Cunningham each had two hits in the game.
U of L (3-1) is back in action Feb. 15-17 at the Samford Bulldog Bash where they will face North Florida at noon on Friday.
