The University of Louisville's No. 26-ranked doubles team of Austen Childs and Simon Childs fell to Tulsa's Arnau Brugues and Phil Stevens 8-6 in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. Austen Childs, No. 26 in the ITA singles ranking picked up a 7-5,6-4 win over Stanford's fourth-ranked Alex Clayton in the first round of the consolation draw.
"I though Austen and Simon played very solidly and definitely well enough to win," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "They had some opportunities that were there for them for them in the middle of the pro set, but they didn't execute. When the best of the best are playing, there is a razor-thin margin among them. If you're not playing at a super high level- if you let down just for a moment- it can cost you everything and that's what happened. We didn't play well for one or two points and that was the margin of victory. This Tulsa team should be ranked in the top five in the country in the next ranking period. They made it all the way to the finals of the All-American championships."
After falling to the No. 1 player in the nation in the first round of singles yesterday, Austen Childs rebounded with a 7-5, 6-4 win over fourth-ranked Alex Clayton of Stanford in the consolation draw. Childs will face Boise State's Clancy Shields in the quarterfinals.
"Austen got arguably his biggest singles win of his young career," said Ecarma "His opponent is one of the most decorated players coming into college tennis, and Stanford's No. 1 player. Austen played well in the match and never got down on himself. He's serving well, which was one of our goals. This win should definitely help his confidence."
