WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The eleventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Monmouth 4-1 Sunday afternoon at So Sweet A Cat Field. Three Cardinal goals in the first half - all within four minutes 30 seconds of each other - proved to be the surge they needed to win the contest.
Louisville got on the scoreboard midway through the first half when freshman Hayley Turner buried a goal on the right side past Monmouth goalkeeper Melissa Katz. Two minutes later, freshman Brynn Adams added a rebound goal to increase the lead to 2-0. Sophomore Simone Attles connected on a feed from sophomore Rachel Hollenbach to push Louisville up 3-0 going into halftime. In the first half of play, the Cards outshot the Hawks 14-1 and held a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners.
U of L tacked on one more goal 10 minutes into the second half when Hollenbach delivered an unassisted shot from the top of the circle to make it a 4-0 game.
With seven minutes left to play, Monmouth's Enza Mazza lead the offensive break that lead to Janine Rini's far-side rebound goal to put the Hawks on the board.
The Cards outshot the Hawks 27-4 and won the corner opportunities battle 12-4. Louisville junior goalkeeper Heather Bustanoby improved to 7-4 as a starter. Monmouth field hockey goalie Melissa Katz registered 14 saves. The Hawks drop to 1-10 on the season.
