LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The eleventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team scored three goals in the second half en route to a 3-1 win over Villanova in a BIG EAST Conference match Friday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
Villanova took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when Abby Sordoni connected on a rebound from Meg Ryan's shot to make it a 1-0 game at the 24:49 mark. The Wildcats went into the locker room up 1-0 at halftime, despite the Cards holding a 9-4 advantage in shots and a 7-1 lead in corners.
Louisville answered just five minutes into the second half when sophomore Tuli Lim notched her team-leading sixth goal of the season when she tipped sophomore Nicole Youman's shot to tie the game at 1-1.
Youman registered her second assist of the game - and team-leading sixth of the year - on a penalty corner shot which was deflected by sophomore Nikki Auker for her fourth goal of the season, giving the Cards a 2-1 lead at the 48:46 mark.
Two minutes later sophomore Karah Nall recorded her first career goal when she rifled the ball from the top of the circle past Villanova goalkeeper Maura McCormick to make it a 3-1 game.
The Wildcats had a chance to cut the lead to one when they were awarded a penalty stroke at the 54:54 mark. Villanova's Dana Ramsen lifted the ball near the cross bar on the glove side of Cardinal goalkeeper junior Heather Bustanoby, who made a spectacular save to thwart the scoring opportunity.
The Cardinals outshot the Wildcats 16-8 and held a 13-5 advantage in penalty corners in the game. Bustanoby (8-4) collected four saves in the win. McCormick had five stops for Villanova (10-3, 1-2 BIG EAST).
U of L (8-4, 3-1) will take a break from league play when it hosts No. 7 James Madison Sunday at 2 p.m. The Dukes will mark the sixth top-ten team the Cards have faced this season.
