LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Despite dominating every statistical category and the play on the field, the University of Louisville women's soccer team was forced to settle for a 1-1 tie against Providence College on a sunny Sunday at Cardinal Park.
"This is a very disappointing result for us because I thought we played well enough to win," noted Head Coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes.
"We kept possession of the ball extremely well and created some great chances. We just have to find a way to capitalize on our chances."
Shannon Smyth, who had seven of the team's 25 shots, tried to convert a pair of headers that were blocked before they found the net.
Providence (5-3-3, 0-2-3 BIG EAST) got on the board first when Jill Camburn's header was blocked, but the rebound was put in by Kelly Pettersen for the 1-0 advantage in the 14th minute.
The Cards (4-4-2, 2-1-2) had a golden opportunity to knot the game at one at the 30:05 mark when Ashley Auld was taken down in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Kate Cunningham stepped up to take the PK, but Friars keeper Jill Schott made the stop, one of 10 saves on the day.
A little over a minute later Kate Delcampio broke in on Cardinal keeper Katie Zoeller 1v1, but Zoeller kept the margin at one with one of her three saves on the afternoon.
In the 38th minute, Caitlin Rehder sent a shot on goal that was stopped by Schott, but the rebound ended up on the foot of Giselle Mangal, who finished from six yards out to even the game at one. It was her second goal of the season.
The Cards had three corners in the waning minutes of the first half, the second of which resulted in a header by Smyth that was stopped by Schott.
The Cards held a 9-7 shot advantage in the first half. Shots on goal were 4-2 Cards.
Lindsay Boling and Caitlin Beck each steered shots on goal in the first five minutes that were turned away by Schott. Auld let loose with what looked to be a potential game winner in the 83rd minute from the right side, but it glanced off of the crossbar.
Louisville outshot the Friars an astonishing 11-3 in the second half, and held a 6-1 edge in shots on, but could not net the winner.
UofL held a 5-3 edge in shots in the overtime periods, and 25-13 overall. Corners were 11-3 Cards.
Despite the disappointing result, Ferguson-Dayes is pleased with how the team is working in the attacking third.
"I'm optimistic that we will begin to score some goals because we are playing too well not to."
The Cardinals now embark upon a season-long four game road trip in BIG EAST play, beginning with a match against Rutgers on Friday at 7:00 p.m. ET in Piscataway, New Jersey. Louisville will return home for a final pair of home matches October 24 and 26 when they host Georgetown and Villanova.
