PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The University of Louisville battled 14th-ranked Rutgers for 84 scoreless minutes before the Scarlet Knights broke through with the game winner in a 1-0 win over the Cardinals Friday night at Yurcak Field.
"In the first half we came out and we were able to do some good things," Head Coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes said.
"In the second half we went away from what was working for us and Rutgers was able seize the momentum. Give credit to Rutgers - a very good team. They were able to take advantage off of a great set piece."
Cardinal sophomore Kelsey Hunyadi put early pressure on the Knights(9-3-0, 4-1-0 BIG EAST) with a shot on goal that was turned away by Knights keeper Erin Guthrie in the 9th minute.
Early attempts to get on the board were thwarted by the Cardinal (4-5-3, 2-2-2 BIG EAST) defense, blocking two of their first three shot attempts.
The Knights defense was equal to the task, blocking two of UofL's five shots in the first half. RU outshot the Cards 6-5 in the first half, with the Cards supplying the only shot on net.
In the second half, the nationally-ranked Knights upped the pressure on UofL, outshooting the Cards 14-1, forcing Cardinal keeper Katie Zoeller to make six saves in the second half.
The Louisville defense turned away four corner kicks in the first seven minutes of the half.
The game-winner came on a set piece on which Gina DeMaio served the ball into the box and Caycie Gusman headed it into the net for her eighth goal of the season at 84:45.
Caitlin Rehder threatened to tie the game in the waning seconds of regulation, but Guthrie made the stop to seal the win for the Knights.
Louisville will remain in New Jersey and face Seton Hall Sunday at 1:00 in game two of the four-game road swing.
