COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Louisville's 26th-ranked doubles team of Austen Childs and Simon Childs posted two wins to advance to the finals of the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championship where they will face Michigan's Jason Jung and Michael Sroczynski on Monday.
Sophomores Childs and Childs (no relation) defeated Ohio State's Steve Moneke and Bryan Koniecko 8-3 in the quarterfinals and went on to beat Minnesota's Tobias Wernet and Michael Sicoro 8-4 in the semis.
Also in the quarterfinals, freshman Sumit-Prakash Gupta and sophomore Viktor Maksimcuk fell to Ohio State's Matt Allare and Justin Kronauge 8-3.
"Sumit Gupta and Viktor Maksimcuk had a nice run and showed they are a good doubles team and can be even better in the future," said head coach Rex Ecarma. "Childs and Childs are showing that they are one of the best teams in the country. After winning the Virginia Invitational, they are in another final and a big one, for the Midwest championship. They are only the second doubles team in U of L history to make the finals - the first was Cody Conley and Joachim Lien. They will try to be first to win the championship and qualify for national indoor championships in two weeks. We came here to win it and we have one more match to go."
In singles action, No. 26 Austen Childs picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win over Ohio State's Allare, but lost to the Buckeye's Koniecko 7-5, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
"I am really pleased with Austen Childs singles effort, he really wanted to make at least the quarterfinals in this tournament and he did that but ran into a buzzsaw in Bryan Koniecko," said Ecarma. "Austen is starting to really take his game to another level, his serve has improved tremendously and it's helping him hold serve much easier."
