LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Senior Robert Rotaru defeated Indiana's Santiago Gruter 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 in the Flight `A' Finals of the 2008 Louisville Fall Invitational Sunday afternoon.
"Robert gave a phenomenal effort in winning yet another third set match in the Louisville Invitational Tournament," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Many of the coaches at the tournament commented on how deep and talented this year's field was. For Robert to win five singles matches in a short amount of time after last week's South Carolina Invitational was an amazing run. He beat some really good players which is an indication that he will be tough to contend with this season."
Rotaru went 5-0 en route to his tournament title, beating players from Western Kentucky, Illinois State and Cleveland State and Brian Livington, who was unattached. In Sunday's championship match, Gruter took the first set 7-5, but Rotaru recovered to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-2.
Also in Sunday's singles play, freshman Sumit-Prakash Gupta lost to DePaul's Bartek Jozwiak 6-4, 6-4 in the `B' consolation finals.
In doubles action, freshman Adam Donaldson and senior Tim Barnoud defeated Western Kentucky's Thomas Krug and Andy True 9-8 in the semifinals to advance to the `B' division championship match where they fell to Lander's Sheharyar Wali and Henrik Willers 8-6.
"For Adam Donaldson and Tim Barnoud to come one win away from their first doubles title shows how much confidence they have in themselves and each other," said Ecarma. "This was a positive weekend for the Louisville tennis team."
