NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team picked up seven singles wins and five doubles wins at the Vanderbilt Invitational Friday.
"I was very satisfied with the effort the players showed today," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We produced some good results and sent toe-to-toe with some teams who did well in the NCAA tournament last year. Even though we are inexperienced right now, our guys showed that they could play at a high level of competition."
In his only singles match of the day, sophomore David Simon defeated Vanderbilt's Vijay Paul 6-2, 6-2 in the White Division Group `A'.
In Group `B' of the White Division, junior Robert Rotaru topped East Tennessee State's Predrag Burmazovic 7-6, 7-5, but fell to Vandy's Evan Dufaux 6-3, 1-6, (7-10).
In the Gold Division `B' group, sophomore Tim Barnoud also went 1-1 on the day, defeating ETSU's Alex Apell 7-6, 6-0, but falling to Vandy's Alex Zotov 2-6, 4-6. Also in the Gold Division `B' Group, junior Alex Zotov of Vanderbilt, defeated junior Pablo Camacho 6-2, 6-4.
Sophomore James McArthur lost to Vanderbilt's Andy Pulido (6-2, 4-6, 9-11) and East Tennessee State's Daniel Isaza 6-1, 6-2 in Group `A' of the Gold Division.
Freshman Simon Childs went 1-1 in the Gray Division, Group `A,' picking up a 7-5, 6-7 (10-7) win over Tennessee's Chris Racz and dropping a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Sebastian Serrano of ESTU. In Group `B' fellow freshman Austen Childs defeated Vandy's Ryan Preston 6-3, 2-6, (10-7) and lost to East Tennessee's Enrique Olivares 5-7, 6-2, (10-5).
In the Black Divison (Group `A') sophomore Ben Clos lost to Vandy's Scott Lieberman 7-5, 6-4 and ETSU's Alex Ahlgren 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Alejandro Calligari went undefeated on the day with a 6-4, 6-7 (10-7) win over Vandy's Adam Baker and a 6-7, 6-3, (10-7) victory over ETSU's Lisandro Picardo.
The Cardinals posted five doubles wins as the team of Simon and Rotaru went undefeated, beating Vandy's Zotov and Paul 8-2 and ETSU's Isaza and Picardo 9-8 in the Black Division Group `A'. In Group `B' Clos and Camacho also went 2-0 with an 8-3 win over Vandy's Lieberman and Pulido and an 8-6 decision over ETSU's Burmazovic and Velez.
In Group `A' of the Gold Division, Austen Childs and McArthur defeated Vandy's Baker and Dufaux 8-4, but fell to ETSU's Olivares and Serrano 9-7. Simon Childs and Alejandro Calligari lost to Vanderbilt's Preston and Salcedo 8-6 and were edged 9-7 by ETSU's Posada and Ahlgren in Group `B'.
