LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - University of Louisville men's tennis coach Rex Ecarma has announced that Austen Childs has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to join the Cardinals in the 2007-08 season
Childs a native of Mount Maunganui, New Zealand was the national junior champions of New Zealand. He also won the International Junior de Leiria and the South Pacific Junior Championships. In addition, he was a quarterfinals in the Australia Open Junior Championships and the Asia/Oceania Closed Championships.
" Austen Childs is a block-buster signee in the sport of college tennis," said Ecarma. "He will impact our tennis team in his first year and brings so much experience from world-class events. To gauge the level of this signing is the fact that he has a win over a fantastic player in Clint Bowles who just last week won the United States Clay Supernational Championships. Austen is excited about joining our team and I am just as enthusiastic to working with him. He joins an already talented recruiting class of Simon Childs, Victor Maksimcuk and Alejandro Calligari. I am hoping that they can develop into the tennis version of (Louisville men's basketball's) Sosa, Smith, Caracter, and Clark. I am confident you will hear about this 2007 recruiting class early in their careers."
The Cardinals finished the 2007 season with a 10-15 overall record and were second in the BIG EAST Conference Championship.
