Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville's men's golf team recorded its first-ever conference championship by winning the 2007 BIG EAST Championships on Tuesday at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky.
With the win, the Cardinals captured the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals on May 17-19 at a site to be determined. The win was the Cardinals' seventh of the year and third this spring.
The Cardinals ended Notre Dame's three-year reign as conference champions. The Irish and Louisville tied last season, but the Irish won in a one-hole playoff last season.
However, Tuesday was a different story as Louisville shot an impressive 844 (-20) to win by 12 strokes over the Fighting Irish (-8). Louisville led from the beginning, including a huge 16-stroke advantage heading into the final round on Tuesday.
Louisville took home medalist honors for the second straight year. Junior Daryl Fathauer won the tournament with a score of 71-68-70=209 and was an All-Conference honoree. It's the second win of his career and the first this season. Last season, Derek Fathauer won the tournament with a score of 202.
Derek and junior Adam Rainaud tied for third overall and both were All-Conference selections. Derek shot an impressive 73-70-69=212, while Rainaud carded a 67-74-71=212.
Sophomore Adam Hadwin had a solid tournament and earned All-Conference accolades, firing 72-69-72=212 to finish in a tie for fifth place.
Freshman Lewis Kirton finished in a tie for 29th after shooting 76-72-77=225.
The Cardinals return to action on May 13-14 at the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, N.C.
