
Softball Tops Eastern Kentucky 7-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team rolled to a 7-1 win over visiting Eastern Kentucky Tuesday evening at Ulmer Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 26-16 on the season, while EKU drops to 19-23.
"I thought we came out a little flat to start the game," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "But we started to gain a our momentum and really did some good things on offense and defense."
The teams played through two scoreless innings before Louisville broke through with three runs in the bottom of the third. Courtney Moore lead off the inning with her second double of the game and scored on Sarah Totten's single down the third base line to put the Cards on the scoreboard. Rebecca Saksefski walked to put runners on first and second for Kristen Wadwell who delivered a two-run triple to right field.
The Cardinals held the 3-0 lead and starting pitcher Kristen Wadwell took a perfect game into the fifth when EKU Kelsey Anderson lead off the frame with a triple to right field. Katie Rolf's base hit sent Anderson home to pull the Colonels within two runs. Becky Werle and Keri Macinsky each singled to load the bases with one out. Rolf was thrown out at the plate when Pam Webber sent a grounder to first and Wadwell got Chanze Patterson to fly out to center field to get out of the jam and keep the score at 3-1.
U of L tacked on two runs bottom of the fifth to increase the lead to 5-1. Totten and Saksefski registered back-to-back one-out singles. Candi Hicks was safe on a bunt single and moved to second on an error which sent Totten home. Saksefski was safe at the plate when Audrey Rendon reached first on a fielder's choice.
The Cardinal offense continued with a pair of runs in sixth. McCrain reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on Cunningham's double. Saksefski stepped up to the plate and delivered a two-run single to cap the scoring at 7-1.
Wadwell (10-5) picked up the win, allowing one earned runs on four hits and striking out four in five innings. Catherine Bishop retired all six batters she faced, with two strikeouts in the final two innings. The Cards had 11 hits in the game and were paced by Moore who went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a run. Saksefski finished 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI. Totten was 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.
Shelby Thompson (0-3) took the loss, allowing seven runs, six earned on 11 hits and five strikeouts in six innings.
U of L will play host to Middle Tennessee in a single game Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
