COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Brooke McCrain's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth gave the University of Louisville a 2-1 win over host Maryland Friday in the Maryland Terrapin Softball Invitational. U of L improves to 8-8, while Maryland drops to 8-9 on the season.
"This was one of the best games we played all year," said Louisville head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We played great defense, Catherine Bishop had one of the best performances and we hit the ball well. Our team really fought hard throughout the game."
The Terps got on the scoreboard in the third when Alex Schultz was safe on an infield single and scored on a double by Amber Jackson.
Maryland held onto the lead until the bottom of the sixth when Candi Hicks led off with a single. Courtney Moore reached on a fielder's choice that saw Hicks safe at second on a Maryland fielding error. Melissa Roth drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Maryland reliever Meredith Nelles retired the next two batters before Brooke McCrain delivered her two-out, two-run single up the middle for the 2-1 win.
The Cards had five hits in the game. Hicks and Kristi Cunningham both finished 2 for 2 at the plate. Catherine Bishop (4-6) got the win, allowing four hits and striking out four in 7.0 innings.
Stacey Jennings (3-6) took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned on four hits and striking out three in 5.0 innings.
Louisville will play Rhode Island at 11 a.m. and Central Connecticut at 3 p.m. Saturday.
