
Softball Cruises Past No. 25 California 12-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team defeated No. 25 California 12-2 in five innings Saturday in the Women 4 Women Softball Invitational. The Cardinals improve to 16-12 on the season while Cal falls to 23-14. Louisville will play No. 6/9 Michigan Sunday at 2:30 at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cards took advantage of seven hits and one error as they jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first inning. Audrey Rendon led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on a wild pitch to start the offense. Melissa Roth followed with a walk to set up Courtney Moore's two-run homer, her second of the tournament and seventh on the season. Brooke McCrain doubled and scored on Sarah Totten's single to make it a 4-0 game. Kristen Wadwell's single placed runners on first and second for Brittany York's RBI hit. Candi Hicks reached on fielder's choice to put runners at the corners. Rendon came around to bat again and reached on a two-base error which scored Wadwell and Hicks.
Cal got on the scoreboard in the top of the third when Julie Meyer doubled, Morgan Siegel walked and Alex Sutton delivered a two-run double to make it a 7-2 game.
U of L tacked on three more runs in the home half of the inning. Totten, Wadwell and Hicks each singled to load the bases. Rendon registered a two-run double and Roth connected on a sacrifice fly as the Cards took a 10-2 lead.
Louisville put up two runs in the fourth. McCrain delivered her second double of the day and scored on Wadwell's fielder's choice. Totten reached on a fielder's choice and came home on a single by Candi Hicks to complete the scoring.
Wadwell (2-3) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out three in five innings. The Cards tied season highs with 12 runs and 13 hits in the game. Totten finished 2 for 3 with three runs and an RBI. Moore was 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI. Wadwell, McCrain and Hick each went 2 for 3 with two runs. Rendon had a 2 for 4 performance and drove in two runs on the day.
Brittany LaRosa (4-5) took the loss, allowing seven runs, five of them earned, on six hits. Sutten led the Bears offensively, going 2 for 3 with two RBI. California will play No. 7/8 Northwestern Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
