LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Louisville starting pitcher senior Catherine Bishop matched a career-high 12 strikeouts as the University of Louisville softball team defeated visiting Bradley 1-0 in the first game of the Red & Black Cardinal Tournament Friday at Ulmer Stadium. The Cards move to 5-7 on the season while the Braves drop to 7-2.
The game featured a pitcher's duel with Bradley's Ashley Birdsong giving up only one hit and Bishop tossing a no-hitter until the fourth inning when Louisville senior Courtney Moore delivered her second hit of the day - a single back to the pitcher. Freshman Melissa Roth's sacrifice bunt sent Moore to second and she scored on a Bradley error to give the Cards the 1-0 lead.
Bishop (3-5) surrendered only one hit in the complete-game shutout and moved into sole possession of first place on the Cards' career shutout list win with 26. The Cards had four hits in the game and were led at the plate by Moore who went 2 for 3 with the game-winning run.
Birdsong (5-1) suffered her first loss of the season, allowing four hits and striking out 12. Stephanie Ramsey broke up Bishop's no-hitter in the fifth when she reached with a wind-blown single that was just out of the reach of second baseman Candi Hicks.
"We need to play like we practice, once we learn to do that, we can win a lot of ballgames," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "I was impressed with Bradley's Ashley Birdsong, she threw very well against us today."
U of L will face Akron at approximately 3 p.m. Friday in the third game of the Red & Black Cardinal Tournament.
