
Softball Splits Western Kentucky Twinbill

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team split a doubleheader with host Western Kentucky Friday. The Cards won the first game 5-1 and fell 4-2 in the second.
In the first game, the Cards jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second when Kassie Stanfill walked and moved to third on Sarah Totten's double. Both runners score on Audrey Rendon's triple.
Louisville tacked on three more runs in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead. Stanfill led off the frame with a single. Totten followed with a double to place runners on second and third. Kristi Cunningham delivered a two-run double. Courtney Moore's single plated Cunningham.
The Hilltoppers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh when Alana Towns registered off a leadoff single, moved to second on Shannon Smith's base hit, took third on Terri Ellingsworth pinch-hit single and crossed the plate on a Renikka Toliver's groundout to make it a 5-1 game.
Stanfill (5-3) went the distance, allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out five. The Cards had 11 hits in the game and were led by Totten's 2 for 3, two run performance at the plate. Rendon went 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBI.
Jennifer Kempf (6-8) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits and striking out five.
In game two, Western Kentucky got on the scoreboard in the third. Toliver reached on an error, stole second, took third on Rochelle Boucher's sacrifice bunt and came home on Sam Cronk's single.
The Hilltoppers pulled ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Towns was hit by a pitch, took second on Ashley Contreras' sacrifice bunt, stole third and crossed the plate on a hit by Ellingsworth.
The Cards came back with two runs in the top of the sixth. Cunningham reached on an error to lead off the frame, moved to second on Rendon's sacrifice bunt. Candi Hicks registered an RBI triple and scored on a groundout by Moore to tie the game at 2-2.
WKU regained the lead with a two-run sixth inning. Towns led off the inning with a single. Ellingsworth singled and took second on the throw to place runners an second and third. Kelsey McCauley reached on a fielder's choice. Louisville third baseman Audrey Rendon fielded the ball, tagged Towns on her way home for the second out of the game, but an error on a double play attempt sent Ellingsworth home. Toliver reached on an infield single, putting runners on the corners with two outs. McCauley scored an insurance run on a double steal for the 4-2 win.
Kristen Wadwell (1-2) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and striking out three in 6.0 innings. Hicks finished the game 2 for 2 with a run and an RBI.
Ryan Rogge (5-7) got the win, allowing two earned runs on two hits and striking out six in seven innings.
U of L (12-11) will return to Ulmer Stadium to face Eastern Michigan in a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
