
Softball Splits with Eastern Michigan

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team split a doubleheader with visiting Eastern Michigan. The Eagles won the first game 4-2 and the Cards took the second 3-2.
In game one, Eastern Michigan jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Lauren Clark led off the game with a triple and scored on Stephanie Sabo's single.
The Cardinals answered with two runs in the third. Audrey Rendon delivered a one-out double. Melissa Roth and Courtney Moore were both hit by pitches the load the bases for Brooke McCrain's two-run double, making the score 2-1.
Eastern Michigan pulled back ahead with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth. Lindsay Schmid drew a leadoff walk and was lifted for pinch-runner Jessica Patterson. Pinch-hitter Kayla Bluthardt was hit by a pitch to place runners on first and second. Jessica Grant stepped up to the plate and delivered an RBI single to tie the game. Bluthardt came home on a Cardinal error to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.
EMU tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Sabo drew a one-out walk and Ashley Strauss followed with a hit. Both runners advanced on Schmid's groundout to place runners at second and third with two outs. An illegal pitch sent Sabo home for the 4-2 lead.
Kristen Wadwell (1-3) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and striking out six in 6.2 innings of relief. The Cards had five hits in the game with Rendon and Roth each finishing 2 for 3 with a run.
Aimee Woodrum (2-3) picked up the complete-game win, giving up two earned runs and striking out four. The Eagles had seven hits in the game. Sabo finished 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Grant was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
In game two, the Cards took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Roth led off the first with a walk, took second on Sarah Totten's sacrifice bunt and moved to third on an illegal pitch. Moore walked and all runners were safe on a fielder's choice by McCrain. Brittany York's RBI single sent Roth home and Moore scored on a base hit by Kristi Cunningham.
The Eagles responded with a two-run third. Heather Giroux singled, moved to second on Clark's fielder's choice. Sabo reached on a fielder's choice which saw Clark out at second. A Louisville miscue allowed Giroux to score and Sabo to move to third. Strauss registered a triple to send Sabo home, tying the game at 2-2.
U of L pulled ahead again in the third. Cunningham singled, moved to second on Kassie Stanfill's base hit. Cunningham scored on a deep infield single by Rendon for the deciding run.
Stanfill (6-3) picked up the complete-game win, allowing two earned runs on four hits and striking out one. York and Rendon were each 2 for 3 with an RBI. Cunningham was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI.
Eastern Michigan's Michelle Hletko (0-4) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on six hits in 3.1 innings.
The Cards (13-12) are back in action March 23-25 when they host the Women4Women Softball Invitational. U of L will face Liberty Friday at 10:30 a.m., and No. 7/9 Northwestern at 3 p.m.
