University of Louisville field hockey senior Jessica Javelet has earned a 2006-07 NCAA postgraduate Scholarship. The NCAA awarded 58 postgraduate scholarships of $7,500 each to 29 male student-athletes and 29 female student athletes who participated in fall sports. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. Javelet becomes the second U of L field hockey player to earn the scholarship, joining Christy Hershey who received the scholarship in the 2003-04 season.
The midfielder from Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., produced a stellar career at U of L, becoming the school's most prolific scorer and one of the most highly decorated players in Cardinal history. She holds the Louisville career records for goals (69), assists (38) and points (176) and the single season marks for goals (30), assists (14) and points (74).
Javelet was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year in 2006, when she helped lead the Cardinals to a share of the BIG EAST regular season title. As a junior, Javelet was the league's Co-Offensive Player of the Year. She received All-BIG EAST First Team accolades in both '05 and '06. Additionally, the NFHCA named Javelet an All-West Region First Team performer for three straight seasons from '04-06.
Javelet also made a name for herself on the national scene. In 2004, as just a sophomore, she received NFHCA All-America Third Team honors. In 2005, Javelet led the nation in goals scored (30) en route to becoming the first player in Louisville history to earn NFHCA first team All-America honors. She was also named to the U.S. Field Hockey Under 21 National Team and was a finalist for the 2005 Collegiate Women's Sports Honda Award for Field Hockey. As a senior, she became U of L's only three-time All-American, receiving NFHCA All-America third team honors. Javelet was also named to the U.S. Field Hockey National Developmental Team.
U of L finished the 2006 season with a 12-8 record and a No. 15 ranking in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. The Cards also clinched a share of the BIG EAST regular season championship with a 5-1 record in league play.
