COLLEGE PARK, Md. - - Senior Audrey Rendon had four RBIs and freshman Rebecca Saksefski scored three runs as the University of Louisville rolled to a 9-0 five inning win over Rhode Island Saturday in the Maryland Terrapin Softball Invitational. U of L improves to 9-8 while Rhode Island falls to 1-7 on the season.
"I was happy with our offense today, but I was not pleased with the lack of intensity our team showed early on," said Louisville head coach Sandy Pearsall.
The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the second when Saksefski walked and Sarah Totten followed with a single to set up Rendon's two-run double.
U of L capitalized on five hits and two errors to score five runs in the top of the fourth. Brooke McCrain and Saksefski started the frame with back to back singles. McCrain crossed the plate when Sarah Totten reached on an error on her sacrifice bunt attempt. Kristi Cunningham was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Rendon's two-run single. Courtney Moore's base hit sent Rendon home. Melissa Roth's single scored Moore to make it a 7-0 game.
McCrain led off the fifth with a solo shot over centerfield to increase the lead to 8-0. Saksefski registered her second hit of the day and scored on Cunningham's RBI single for the final 9-0 tally.
Catherine Bishop (5-6) posted the complete game shutout while striking out six. The only hit she surrendered was a single to lead off the game. After issuing her only walk in the game in the second inning, Bishop retired 10 straight batters. Offensively, the Cards had 11 hits. Rendon went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and a run. Saksefski finished 2 for 2 with three runs. Totten also went 2 for 2 with two runs. McCrain finished 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI.
