WASHINGTON, D.C. - University of Louisville freshman Caitlin Rehder picked a dramatic moment to pick up her first career goal, netting the overtime game winner in a 1-0 win at Georgetown Sunday, clinching a second place finish in the BIG EAST National Division and home field advantage for the BIG EAST Championship Quarterfinals.
The #2 seed Cardinals (12-4-2, 7-3-1 BIG EAST) will now host American Division #3 seed Marquette on Sunday, November 4 at 1:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
Monique Gjini put an early shot on net that GU (13-7-0, 6-5-0) keeper Jade Higgins saved in the sixth minute.
Cardinal keeper Joanna Haig made five first half saves to keep the game scoreless as it headed into half.
The Cards pressured the Hoyas early in the second half with shots on goal by Shannon Smyth, Jen Avila and Chelsea Spencer, and the team exchanged corner kicks in the final ten minutes of regulation, but neither team could break through.
Rehder didn't waste any time in the first overtime period, taking a feed from Gjini, working past a defender on the left side of the penalty area and launching the game winner to the upper right corner in the 93rd minute.
The assist for Gjini is the 20th of her career, establishing a new UofL career record by eclipsing Kim Marshall's school record. The senior is now second in games started with 76 and is in a five-way tie for games played, having taken the pitch 77 times in the Red and Black.
Haig picked up her 11th shutout of the season and 19th of her career, extending her school records.
Each team finished the match with eight shots and six shots on goal.
The Cards are now 4-1-2 in overtime games this season.
The winner of next Sunday's match will earn a birth into the BIG EAST Championship semifinals at West Virginia's Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on November 9. The championship game will take place on November 11. The final three matches of the championship will be televised live on CSTV. The tournament champion will earn an automatic birth into the 64-team NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship.
In each of the past two seasons the Cardinals have been eliminated in the BIG EAST Championship quarterfinals. Earlier this season Kelsey Hunyadi scored the game-tying goal with 11 seconds left to cap a thrilling comeback and give Louisville a 2-2 tie against Marquette. The Cards had trailed 2-0 in the second half.
