
No. 21 Men's Soccer Falls to DePaul 2-1

CHICAGO - - The 21st ranked University of Louisville men's soccer team fell to host DePaul 2-1 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup Wednesday. The Cardinals drop to 9-5-1 (5-3-1 BIG EAST), while DePaul moves to 9-5-0 (5-4).
The Blue Demons jumped to an early lead when Patrick Hopkins delivered a header off of Julian Chille's corner kick just 1:54 into the game.
Louisville came close to leveling the score several times in the first half. Kenney Walker ripped a hard shot towards the DePaul goal at 20:46 and Joey Watson sent the ball in the direction of the Blue Demon net at 38:52. DePaul goalkeeper Brian Visser stopped both attempts. DePaul took the 1-0 lead into the break after both teams recorded four shots in the first half.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Louisville scored the equalizer as sophomore Gerardo Chavez crossed the ball from the right flank. Sophomore Frank Jonke one-timed sophomore Chavez's serve into the DePaul net at 53:57. Following their score, the Cardinals took four more shots in a 20 minute span, but the ball was off target on every attempt.
In the 84th minute, John Kornfeld set up the game-winning goal as he served the ball towards Hopkins from the top of the box. Hopkins connected with his head and drove the ball into the Cardinal goal at 83:02 for his second goal of the game.
Louisville outshot DePaul 9-6 in the contest. Cardinal sophomore goalkeeper David Simolike posted three saves, while DePaul's Visser finished with two stops.
The Cardinals are back in action when they host BIG EAST opponent Rutgers on Sunday, at 7 p.m. at Cardinal Park.
