Men's Tennis Has Strong Showing Friday at Midwest Regional

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team picked up four singles wins and two doubles victories on the second day of the ITA Midwest Regional Championship Open Division Friday.
"The team is still battling the flu, but came through with good results today," said Louisville head coach Rex Ecarma. "Even though they didn't have much stomach, they showed a lot of heart. I was especially impressed with Viktor Maksimcuk, who is our third freshman to produce impressive results in a fall tournament, joining Austen Childs and Alejandro Calligari."
Freshman Viktor Maksimcuk defeated Wisconsin's Peter Marrach 7-5, 6-3 and Ohio State's Dominic Ozanne 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16.
Junior Pablo Camacho rebounded from a 6-0 first set loss to beat Wisconsin's Michael Dierberger 7-5, 6-3 in the next two sets. DePaul's Vanja Grugec defeated Camacho 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16.
Freshman Alejandro Calligari topped Marquette's Mark Rutherford 6-4, 6-4, but fell 6-4, 6-3 to Iowa's Reinoud Hall.
Sophomore Ben Clos lost a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 decision to Toledo's Chris Clark.
In doubles action, Austen Childs and Robert Rotaru defeated Northwestern's Juan Gomez and David Seyferth 8-2. The Cardinals' David Simon and Kenneth Nordheim defeated Valparaiso's Alex Lau and Tom Litscher 8-2. Iowa's Patrick Dwyer and Reinoud Haal topped Louisville's Camacho and Maksimcuk 8-4. Calligari and Clos fell 8-4 to Marquette's Brett Binkley and Mark Rutherford.
