MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team went undefeated on the first day of the ITA Midwest Region IV Tournament.
"The stomach flu virus is ripping through our team 10 of 11 players have the virus and have been in bad shape for last few days," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "My hope was to field some players for the Midwest championship and that they would finish their matches. These players felt miserable out there, but won all four matches we played. They really had nothing in their tank, but came out with four wins against quality opponents. I am a proud papa right now. I feel like these guys exceeded all I'd hoped for. I'm tickled to death."
Freshman Viktor Maksimcuk defeated Illinois' Colon Alpar 6-3, 6-0. Junior Pablo Camacho topped Xavier's Chris Herrlinger 6-3, 7-5. Freshman Alejandro Calligari picked up a three-set win over DePaul's Alasdair Graetz 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Sophomore Ben Clos defeated Ryan Henning of Cleveland 6-2, 7-6.
The round of 32 will be played Friday morning.
